IN JANUARY

via
Books:
What the Most Successful People do before Breakfast, by Laura Vanderkam - great
Winter Soldier: The Complete Collection, by Brubaker, Guice, Lovle - also great
St Francis of Assisi, by G. K. Chesterton
The Martian, by Andy Weir - great
Purgatory, by Dante (translated by Anthony Esolen)
The Marvelous land of Snergs, by E. A. Wyke-Smith - great
How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, by Dale Carnegie - good

*great means I recommend

Movies:
Brooklyn - not the best but good
Monty Python and the Holy Grail - very funny at times, at other times over the edge
Lover Come Back - not my thing but Doris Day is so bright and lovely
Kingsman: The Secret Service - love the style and class
*Princess Diaries 1 and 2 - Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway < 3
Finding Dory - sweet and funny and colorful
*Captain America: The First Avenger
Storks - funny
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
Salmon Fishing on the Yemen - loved this movie
Big Fish - Tim Burton and Ewan McGregor. Strange but sweet too, especially the ending.
Moulin Rouge! - I didn't know who directed this when I started it, but a couple minutes in I knew it must be Baz Luhrmann because his style is so very recognizable. It's so imaginative. I love the soundtrack (eg Your Song)
The Impossible - good, music didn't seen to match at times

*seen before

TV Series:
Sherlock season 4
Smash (couple eps) - meh
Breathless - Set in the early 60s. It ends without an ending and there's no second season so be warned.
z: the beginning of everything - fun, then meh
New Girl (1 ep) - sweet
Avatar: The Last Airbender - great
Stranger Things (3 episodes) - I watched this to find out why people like it, but I still don't get it.
That Girl - cute and fun and light

hope you all have a wonderful February xx

  1. I love Avatar: The Last Airbender!! Legends of Korra, not so much.

I have yet to try and watch Stranger Things, mostly because I am *that* much of a chicken and it looks kinda creepy. Also, the more hype there is around a show, the more dubious I am about it.

Have you watched "The Crown"? Now that is a show that definitely measures up to all the hype, especially if you enjoy history and period dramas.

Have you ever watched "Calamity Jane" or "On Moonlight Bay"? Those are two of my favorite Doris Day movies! I don't enjoy her later movies as much, but she is always so adorable and spunky, it's hard to resist a good Doris Day movie. :P

Can you believe January is already over?!?!

    1. Me too! Aww, I'm sorry that one isn't as good. I'm still looking forward to it after I finish Avatar though. ;)

I'm not a fan of creepy stuff either but Stranger Things really wasn't very creepy to me. I liked some of the characters but overall I didn't care for it. Not really my thing. o.o

I haven't seen that The Crown. Sounds familiar. Thanks for the rec. :)

Ooo Doris Day recommendations! Thank you! I haven't seen anything with her that I really like yet. I'll check those out. :)

I know. That was fast. Really full too though. Have a great February Dani! <3

  3. Avatar is my favorite childhood series! Kids really need more shows that are just like that, because I feel like they're missing out. Also, Smash-- I'm such a theatre kid I have to watch it, but I'm not sure now...

I kind of want to watch Big Fish, but Tim Burton freaks me out. >.<

    xoxo Morning

    1. I love Avatar so much. It's wonderful. Personally I'd rewatch old Avatar episodes instead of watch Smash. ;)

haha I know what you mean. I thought it was a less-strange Burton movie though, if that helps. It's a sweet story.

thanks for commenting, Morning ♥ xx

  4. Ahhhhhh, Moulin Rouge! I have so many songs from that soundtrack memorized. It's an amazing rendition of Camille, isn't it? And I love the soundtrack dearly, both volumes.

  5. THE MARTIAN YES. I was surprised by how much I loved that book! And Sherlock Season 4 was a mixed bag, for me.....what did you think about it?

    1. YES THE MARTIAN YES. Me too. I was so happy reading it. :) Sherlock season 4...yeah mixed bag for me too. Ultimately, I didn't care for it. I tend to enjoy stuff while I watch it, especially when it's such great actors and is cleverly put together, but the story just wasn't Sherlock-y to me. You know?

      Thanks for commenting, Ellie ♥

  6. You read The Martian that makes me very happy. :D :D :D

Ewan McGregor month? He's great! I love Salmon Fishing and Big Fish, and thought The Impossible was very interesting. I also agree with your thought on Brooklyn and Kingsman. :)

Sherlock season 4 -- yay or nay?

Sorry you don't get Stranger Things -- it's just one of those things I think... some go crazy over it some don't. Me, I'm crazy. ;)

    1. It was so great. I'm so happy you talked me into it. :D I haven't read a whole lot of fiction lately and I had so much fun reading it.

haha yes. I loved Salmon Fishing and Big Fish. Especially Salmon Fishing.

...nay. When I wrote this post I'd just finished watching season 4 and hadn't decided if I liked it or not, and I'm still in somewhat of an emotional turmoil on account of it, especially that last episode. But ultimately, I feel like the show and characters have been getting less and less Sherlock Holmes-y and it's the Sherlock Holmes-ness that I love. (Of course I also love MF and BC and how cleverly the episodes are put together et al.)

yeah I guess so. I'm glad you enjoy it so much :)

  9. Three cheers for Sherlock and also I have an interest in Z. Just haven't started it. Yet. Oh, and I adore Captain America (of course), and liked 'Fishing' (quite a lot). Sorry you didn't love Brooklyn. It has become one of my favorites - although I did get annoyed with the heroine about her indecision! ;)
